Yes, football season is over, basketball season is in full swing, and baseball season is just around the corner. We do enjoy our sports calendar. There is also a Christian calendar, sometimes called the Church calendar. According to the Christian calendar we are in the Season of Lent. The season of Lent is a time of preparation leading up to Easter Sunday to prepare ourselves to fully understand and experience the joy of the Resurrection. Easter Sunday is very early this year: March 27!
During the season of Lent followers of Jesus are encouraged to focus on discipline and renewal by using the Christian practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving (helping those in need).
Prayer: When asked how to improve one’s prayer time, Thomas Merton is said to have responded, “Take the time.” More is simply better. Take time to pray and you will become more prayerful.
Fasting: We usually associate fasting with food. But what about fasting from TV, FB, or hand-held devices? During a fast the extra time is spent in prayer and Bible reading. More is simply better.
Almsgiving: : I am not sure we have “alms” to give, but we certainly acknowledge that the things we own are not just ours; they are gifts from God. Because God has given to us we give to help people in need. Again, more is simply better.
I know, the word Lent may sound a bit strange. But let’s give it a try: more prayer, more fasting to allow time for prayer and Bible reading, and more giving to help those in need. More of these Christians disciples may lead to a better walk with Jesus as he walks to the cross.
The Season of Lent leads us right to the most important week of the Christian Calendar, Holy Week. As follower of Jesus we will celebrate Holy Week with Palm Sunday on March 20, Maundy Thursday on March 24, and Good Friday on March 25. Remember, Easter Sunday is early this year: March 27. Jesus lives!
