In recent years I have introduced our JCM students to a praise song entitled The Trees of the Field. The students have enthusiastically embraced this song. The music is reminiscent of a Hebrew folk song and demands that everyone clap with their hands as they sing the song. The song is full of dancing, joy, and praise. The text of the song is based upon Isaiah 55:12.
You shall go out with joy and be led forth with peace;
The mountains and the hills will break forth before you.
They’ll be shouts of joy, and all the trees of the field will clap, will clap their hands.
And all of the trees will clap their hands,
The trees of the field will clap their hands,
The trees of the field will clap their hands
While you go out with joy.
As you read the text it becomes very obvious that you must clap with your hands as you sing this song.
Isaiah chapter 55 has 13 verses and as previously stated The Trees of the Field is based upon verse 12. Isaiah chapter 55 has several well-know verses that you will recognize. Let’s explore all 13 of these verses and see what God teaches us about music and worship. My next several posts for my “Always Singing” column will examine the verses of Isaiah chapter 55.
